Discover the sights of Kőszeg and its surroundings!
The old buildings and squares of our town centre, which survived the world wars, are gradually being restored, bringing back the romantic atmosphere of the Middle Ages! Deservedly called the "jewel box of the country", there is no visitor who would not like to fall in love with this little town!
Situated on the Austrian border and with a population of around ten thousand, our romantic little town is rich in history and has played an important role in the life of both Hungary and Austria. Throughout history, Kőszeg has belonged to both sides of the border, so the mixture of German, Austrian and Hungarian culture is quite dominant in the life of our town, but there is also a significant influence of Croatian culture dating back to the time of the Turkish invasions. The most famous story of Kőszeg is undoubtedly that of the Turkish siege, when the town defended itself against an overwhelming force of five and saved the whole of Austria!
One of the country's most atmospheric small towns is rightly called Hungary's little jewel box! Its historic squares and romantic streets are rich in monuments. It offers visitors many attractions, unique exhibitions, countless programmes and a wealth of curiosities.
Our town is famous for its clean, fresh air, sub-alpine climate and tranquillity. Many people come here to recharge their batteries, to spend an active holiday, and there are numerous opportunities for hiking, alpannonia® tours, round trips where the signposts accompany you with maps, guidance, humour and inspiring quotes and curiosities.
Throughout the city you can feel the remnants of the Middle Ages and its romantic atmosphere. Kőszeg is still a town of treasure chests, so keep your eyes peeled for treasures as you stroll through the charming streets. The church plays a beautiful melody at noon, but the bell also rings every day at 11 o'clock to commemorate the Turkish Exodus!
There are a thousand little wonders and curiosities to be discovered in the area, and the small villages at the foot of the mountains are also full of attractions. Explore the wineries of the Kőszeg Hills or the products of the artisans of the Nature Park, who sell their wares from the front of their houses!
There is plenty to do in and around the town all year round! Food festivals, siege days, the 153-year-old Brass Band Reunion, the famous Castle Theatre in the summer, the Harvest Festival in the autumn, exciting events, numerous exhibitions or simply the many other excursions you can choose from.
Its proximity to the Austrian border also makes it an interesting place to visit. The Austrian side of the range is full of beautiful places (also with Hungarian origin) such as Lockenhaus Castle, Bernstein, Rechnitz and Mariasdorf. You can even enjoy a picnic at the foot of 350-year-old chestnut trees!
